Plumbing in Nashville and Middle Tennessee

We repair and replace water heaters, find leaks, fix pipes and install fixtures across Nashville and Middle Tennessee. The same company does the electrical, so a job that needs both doesn’t wait on a second trade.

What plumbing work do we do?

Jamie holds a plumbing license alongside his electrical one. The plumbing side covers water heaters, tank and tankless; leak detection and pipe repair; low water pressure; water lines and shut-off valves; and fixtures from a kitchen faucet to a freestanding tub. Each has its own page with the details.

Dana Shelton’s review on this page is about a water heater, and her short version of how it went is that it’s working great.

Where does Metro Water’s pipe end and yours begin?

At the meter. Metro Water Services owns the line from the main in the street to the meter; the property owner is responsible from the meter to the house, and that includes a lead service line if there is one. A leak in the yard between the meter box and the foundation is the owner’s to fix, and so is everything inside the walls.

In December 2025, Metro Water mailed letters to customers whose service lines were lead, galvanized and due for replacement, or of unknown material. Metro also says Nashville “does not have a lead problem”. If one of those letters came to your house, the first step is finding out what the pipe actually is where it comes through the wall, and we can look at that on the estimate visit.

Who needs a plumbing license in Tennessee?

Anyone contracting a plumbing job of $25,000 or more needs a Tennessee contractor’s license, and a subcontractor needs one once the plumbing portion alone reaches that amount. Below it, the Limited Licensed Plumber covers work in places that use the State Fire Marshal, and general maintenance under $500 is exempt. Inside Metro, plumbing permits run through Metro Codes’ Plumbing Division at 615-862-6570.

Why it helps when the plumber is also the electrician

A lot of plumbing has a wire in it. An electric water heater needs a 240-volt circuit sized to the new unit. A garbage disposal is plumbed into the sink and powered from under it. A well pump, a sump pump, an instant hot water tap, a bidet seat: each is half plumbing and half electrical. With one company holding both licenses, the estimate shows the whole job and you aren’t the one coordinating two schedules.

What moves a plumbing price is where the problem is, how much wall, floor or ceiling stands between us and it, the materials, and whether a permit is needed. Each gets its own line on the estimate.

“Very, prompt, professional and provided excellent service. Water heater is working great!”

Plumbing: questions

Do plumbers need a license in Tennessee?

Yes, above set limits. Tennessee requires a contractor’s license for plumbing contracts of $25,000 or more, and the Limited Licensed Plumber license covers smaller jobs where the State Fire Marshal handles permits and inspections. General maintenance under $500 is exempt. You can check any plumber’s license at verify.tn.gov before you hire them.

Does Nashville have lead water pipes?

Some service lines may still be lead, though Metro Water Services says Nashville “does not have a lead problem”. In December 2025 it sent letters to customers whose lines were lead, galvanized needing replacement, or of unknown material. The pipe from the meter to the house belongs to the homeowner, so replacing that part is a private job.

Does plumbing work in Nashville need a permit?

For new or moved fixtures, yes. Metro Codes’ renovation guidance says new or relocated plumbing fixtures and new shower or tub enclosures need a permit, while vanities and cabinets set without plumbing or electrical work don’t. Metro’s Plumbing Division, at 615-862-6570, can answer questions about a specific job before it starts.

Can a plumber do electrical work in Tennessee?

Only with an electrical license as well. Tennessee licenses electrical (CE) and plumbing (CMC-A) as separate classifications, so a plumber who wires a water heater circuit needs both, or a licensed electrician alongside. Jamie is licensed in both trades, which is why a tankless swap or a disposal install from us comes on one estimate.

How much does a plumber cost in Nashville?

It depends on the job far more than the hour. The things that move a plumbing price are where the problem is, what has to be opened to reach it, the parts or fixture, and whether Metro Codes requires a permit. Our estimates are itemized with scope, timeline and cost, so you see each piece before you decide.
