Where do Arrington homeowners get permits?
From two offices, depending on the work. Williamson County Building Codes, at 1320 West Main Street in Franklin (615-790-5718), handles building permits for the unincorporated county. Electrical permits skip the county entirely: the county’s own page says that as of June 8, 2023, they’re available through the State of Tennessee at core.tn.gov.
In practice, a bathroom remodel with new circuits in Arrington can carry a county building permit and a State electrical permit for the same job. The State inspects to the 2017 National Electrical Code.
How old are Arrington houses?
Harder to pin down than in most towns. The Census estimate for the 37014 ZIP puts the median build year near 1998, with a margin of about nine years either way, because the ZIP is small: about 3,200 people.
That makes the house itself the better guide. The date on the panel label, the water heater’s data plate and the type of pipe at the main shutoff say more about a specific Arrington house than any ZIP-wide number.
Is Arrington too far for a service call?
It’s about 40 miles from our base in Hermitage, one of the longer drives on our list, and we’d rather say so than gloss over it. When you call, tell us what’s going on, and we’ll talk through timing and whether it makes sense to put more than one job on the same visit.
Properties with detached shops and outbuildings bring their own electrical work: a separate feed to the building, outdoor and security lighting, or a generator hookup so the freezer and the furnace keep running during an outage.
Can an Arrington owner wire a shop or barn themselves?
Under Tennessee’s rule, a property owner can wire their own residence on an owner’s permit, one in 12 months, and that permit comes from the State like any other here. A detached shop is a fair question to put to the State before you start, since the rule speaks of the residence.
If you hire it out, the electrician needs a license that fits the job. Tennessee’s Limited Licensed Electrician category covers work under $25,000 in areas the State Fire Marshal permits or inspects, which includes unincorporated Williamson County. Feeds to outbuildings are worth doing right: the NFPA puts electrical distribution and lighting equipment behind an average of 430 home fire deaths a year from 2019 to 2023.
