Murfreesboro: MTE power, city-licensed electricians

Two rules set Murfreesboro apart. Its old city electric department has been part of Middle Tennessee Electric since July 1, 2020, and the city requires electrical work to be done by an electrician holding a City of Murfreesboro license.

Does Murfreesboro require a city electrical license?

Yes. The City of Murfreesboro licenses electrical contractors itself, in classes from residential to commercial, and the licenses expire each January 31. The city’s homeowner permit affidavit says electrical work must be performed by an electrician licensed by the city.

A State license alone doesn’t cover work inside city limits. Before you book any electrician for a Murfreesboro job, ask whether they hold a current City license.

The city’s license list runs from Class 1A and 1B electrical contractors through a Class II residential electrical contractor, Class III heating and air conditioning, and Class IV signs, plus journeyman registration. Its Board of Electrical Examiners administers the exams. For a house, the residential class is the one to ask about.

Outside the city, the rules change. A house in unincorporated Rutherford County falls under the State electrical program, and the State lists Rutherford County Codes, 615-898-7734, as one of its permit issuing agents.

What changed when Murfreesboro Electric joined MTE?

The utility changed; the permit office didn’t. The Murfreesboro Electric Department merged into Middle Tennessee Electric, with closing on June 30, 2020 and July 1 the first day the two operated as one, per MTE. Homes that used to deal with the city’s electric department now go to MTE for service, meters and outages.

Murfreesboro is still on the State’s list of jurisdictions with their own electrical inspections, so the city issues the permit. Its trade sub-permits aren’t issued until a building permit is, on projects that need one.

Which water utility serves a Murfreesboro address?

One of two: Murfreesboro Water Resources Department or Consolidated Utility District, depending on where the house sits. The city publishes a service-area map, and Consolidated Utility can be reached at 615-893-7225. If you don’t know which one serves you, the name on the water bill settles it. That’s also the utility to call if the valve at the meter has to be closed before a main shutoff inside the house is replaced.

Murfreesboro is the largest city on our list after Nashville, with about 161,000 people and a median house built in 2002. Stones River National Battlefield sits on its northwest side. From our base in Hermitage the drive is about 41 miles.

Murfreesboro: questions

Do I need a city-licensed electrician in Murfreesboro, TN?

Yes. The City of Murfreesboro requires electrical contractors to hold a city electrical license, and its homeowner permit affidavit says electrical work must be done by a city-licensed electrician. Licenses expire every January 31, so ask any electrician you hire whether theirs is current.

When did Murfreesboro Electric merge with MTE?

July 1, 2020 was the first day the Murfreesboro Electric Department and Middle Tennessee Electric operated as one utility, after the deal closed on June 30. TVA approved the merger that June. MTE now serves the city’s former electric customers for service, meters and outages.

Who supplies water in Murfreesboro?

Murfreesboro Water Resources Department or Consolidated Utility District of Rutherford County, depending on the address. The city says each home is served by one of the two and publishes a service-area map to check. Consolidated Utility District’s number is 615-893-7225. Leaks on the house side of the meter are plumbing work.

Who issues electrical permits inside Murfreesboro city limits?

The city does. Murfreesboro is on the State Fire Marshal’s list of jurisdictions exempt from the State electrical program, so permits come from the city’s Building and Codes Department rather than the State. The city issues trade sub-permits only after a building permit when a project requires one.
