Mt. Juliet, eleven miles up the road

Mt. Juliet is about 11 miles east of Hermitage, the nearest city to us in Wilson County, where our base is. The city issues its own electrical permits, so the State program doesn’t inspect work inside city limits.

How did the March 2020 tornado hit Mt. Juliet?

Hard. After its EF-2 damage in Hermitage, the March 3, 2020 tornado crossed into Wilson County and damaged dozens of homes in the Chandler Road and Triple Crown Parkway neighborhoods. It then strengthened to EF-3, leveled homes on Catalpa Drive and Clearview Drive, and peaked along Eastgate Boulevard. Three people died in Mt. Juliet, according to the National Weather Service: an elderly couple on Catalpa Drive and a security guard at a warehouse.

The storm also took two schools with it: the Weather Service reported West Wilson Middle School and Stoner Creek Elementary damaged badly enough to be torn down and rebuilt.

If you bought a house in that path, ask what was rebuilt and what was repaired. A new roof says nothing about the meter base, the service mast or the wiring inside a wall that got wet.

Who issues electrical permits in Mt. Juliet?

The City of Mt. Juliet. The State Fire Marshal lists Mt. Juliet as exempt from its electrical program, so the city’s Building Department issues the permit and inspects the work. Outside city limits the answer can change, and the address decides which office you deal with.

That sets Mt. Juliet apart from Lebanon, the other Wilson County city on our list, where the city’s building office doesn’t do electrical and State deputy inspectors do. Two houses in the same county can have their wiring checked by two different governments.

If you aren’t sure an address is inside Mt. Juliet’s city limits, ask the city’s Building Department before anyone applies, since that answer decides which office inspects the wiring.

What do 2006 houses in Mt. Juliet tend to need?

The median house in Mt. Juliet was built in 2006, and about 42,000 people live in the city. Houses that age are well into wear on water heaters, faucets and toilets, and many owners start adding what the original build didn’t include.

That might be a Level 2 EV charger, which the Department of Energy describes as a 240-volt connection best installed by a certified electrical contractor. It might be recessed lighting in a room that only had a ceiling fan, outdoor and landscape lighting, or a bathroom due for a new vanity and a tiled shower. Because we coordinate electrical and plumbing in-house, a list like that can go on one itemized estimate.

Mt. Juliet: questions

Does Mt. Juliet issue its own electrical permits?

Yes. Mt. Juliet is on the State Fire Marshal’s list of jurisdictions exempt from the State electrical program, so the City of Mt. Juliet’s Building Department issues electrical permits and inspects the work inside city limits. Outside them, check which office covers the address before work starts.

Which Mt. Juliet neighborhoods did the 2020 tornado damage?

The National Weather Service names the Chandler Road and Triple Crown Parkway neighborhoods, with EF-2 damage, and the Catalpa Drive and Clearview Drive neighborhoods, where homes were leveled at EF-3 strength. Three people died in Mt. Juliet on March 3, 2020, of five deaths along the 60-mile path.

How far is Mt. Juliet from Hermitage?

About 11 miles east by road, in Wilson County, the same county as our base. The March 2020 tornado followed much the same line, crossing from Hermitage into Wilson County before it reached Mt. Juliet.

What should I check on a Mt. Juliet house repaired after the 2020 tornado?

The meter base, the service mast and any wiring in walls that took water, along with the permits for the repair. A new roof is the easy part to see. The tornado did EF-2 to EF-3 damage across Mt. Juliet, and wiring hidden behind finished drywall doesn’t announce a problem.
